Washington is a city of treasures – some that we all know about, like the Smithsonian Museums, the monuments, the Capitol Building, and the White House. Others will surprise us as we become familiar with this historic city. Our hotel is conveniently located a stone’s throw from the Capitol Building and Smithsonian Museums. Our nation’s history comes to life on this fascinating tour.
Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D
We fly to Washington, DC, where we lodge for six nights at the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol. It is located in the heart of our nation’s capital, just steps away from the National Mall.
DAY 2 B, D
The day begins visiting memorials with our local guide. We'll go to Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Then, we have a free afternoon with lunch on your own. Later, we enjoy a dinner to welcome us to the city with our fellow SUN TOURS Travelers.
DAY 3 B
Today starts with a visit to Ford's Theater, where your ticket includes the museum, One Destiny, Peterson House, and the Center for Education and Leadership. Enjoy an independent lunch at L'Efant Plaza. In the afternoon, our local guide meets us again to visit the Lincoln, Vietnam, WWII, and Korean Memorials.
DAY 4 B
Today is your free day to explore from our hotel’s central location. The Smithsonian Museums are a few blocks away and can be reached on foot, by cab, or by the Metro. Choose from the National Gallery of Art, Museum of the American Indian, Air & Space Museum, American History Museum, Holocaust Memorial Museum, Arts and Industries Museum, Natural History Museum, Freer Gallery of Art, and many more. In addition, scores of other attractions near the city center are just a short cab ride away.
DAY 5 B
Our first stop this morning is at the Airforce Memorial. When then make our way to the US Marine Corps Memorial and Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon was George Washington's impressive home on the Potomac River for 45 years. There are a dozen outbuildings, Washington's tomb, and the Museum & Educational Center. Still enjoying Mount Vernon we watch a movie titled "We fight to be free" in the Ford Orientation Center. As the finale of the day, we tour the mansion before we head back to our hotel.
DAY 6 B, D
We begin our day with a tour of Arlington National Cemetery. Here we can visit the Women in Military Service Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and JFK’s grave site. There is also time to visit the Air Force & Iwo Jima Memorials. Next, we go to the US Capitol Visitor Center for independent lunch, shopping, and then a guided tour of the Capitol itself. Next stop is the Library of Congress, the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States, afterwards, we relish a group dinner.
DAY 7 B
On our final day in DC, we head to the Smithsonian Institution Building (known as "The Castle"), and then go to the White House Visitors Center. Next, we arrive in Georgetown for an independent lunch before we begin a guided tour of the Washington National Cathedral. And finally, we head homeward and return to Albuquerque.
