We head south to Cloudcroft, 9000 ft. above sea level. On the way, we'll explore Spaceport America, the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport. The Lodge at Cloudcroft, with its rich and cultured past and charming rooms filled with antique furnishings, reminds us of a quieter way of life. A delicious Thanksgiving buffet fills our tummies and offers nap incentives. Our return takes us through McGinn's Pistachioland and ruin of Salinas and Gran Quivera.

There is a place in Far West Texas where night skies are dark as coal and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. Here, at the end of the road, hundreds of bird species take refuge in a solitary mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus bloom in sublime southwestern sun, and diversity of species is the best in the country. This magical place is Big Bend.

Branson’s reputation as a top vacation destination is well-earned. The museums and other attractions we will visit are as diverse as the live theatre we will attend. Ethereal Thorncrown Chapel, five great shows in Branson, and two important attractions in Oklahoma City, round out this tour to the breathtaking Ozark Mountains.

We head west across the colorful deserts of northern New Mexico and Arizona, with a stop in San Marino to visit an extraordinary botanical garden. The next day, we get to view the floats close-up as they get their finishing touches. Then it’s time to watch them parade down Colorado Street from our reserved seats! After a tour and lunch at the historic Mission Inn, it’s on to Flagstaff, where the wind in the pines soothes us to sleep.
