Close your eyes. Imagine 70 miles of sun-drenched coast, an inviting ocean, and a year-round forecast of 70°F. Such a place exists, and it’s closer than you think. Come with us to San Diego, and you’ll understand why this southernmost stretch of the state of California is a traveler’s favorite. We explore it all, from the zoo and museums of Balboa Park, to the seals, sea life, and charms of La Jolla.
Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D
After our short flight to San Diego, we check into our hotel, the elegant Hilton Bayfront Hotel, located close by the Gaslamp District. This will be our home for all four nights. The hotel features expansive windows overlooking San Diego Bay and downtown’s skyline and 6 different dining venues.
DAY 2 B, D
This morning we board our deluxe motorcoach and explore. We cross the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island and spend some time at the Hotel del Coronado, a landmark 1880s' hotel with Queen Anne Revival architecture. We enjoy a group dinner this evening followed by the San Diego Symphony's Star-Spangled Pops concert - a patriotic extravaganza with All-American hits from Main Street to Broadway, complete with John Phillip Souza marches, a tribute to the military and a spectacular firework display that lights up the night sky! Relax in your reserved seats at the Embarcadero Marina Park as you enjoy the sweet summer breeze of the harbor.
DAY 3 B
Happy 4th of July! We rise early and travel to Orange Avenue on Coronado Island for the 80th Annual Independence Day Parade. The parade has over 150 entries, with high stepping bands, colorful floats and special groups marching together, cheered on by flag wavers and patriots. We enjoy a relaxing cruise on San Diego Bay this afternoon. This may be a good evening to stroll San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District, an area of restored late-19th and early 20th-century Victorian buildings with lots of options for dinner.
DAY 4 B, D
This morning we enjoy Balboa Park, a National Historic Landmark. Located in the heart of the city, it consists of 1,200 beautiful and lushly planted acres. Additionally, it is home to numerous historical buildings, 17 museums, multiple performing arts venues, lovely gardens, trails, and many other attractions, including the San Diego Zoo. The park was created for the Panama California Exhibition of 1915-1916, and most of the buildings remain from that event. The predominant architecture is Spanish-style, low-rise buildings that blend in with the natural surroundings. We are free to explore the park and to choose any of the museums to explore.
This afternoon we go to the birthplace of California at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Take a tour of the some of the historic sites, visit one of several museums or shop in the one-of-a-kind boutiques before our delicious farewell dinner.
DAY 5 B
As we head to the airport for our flight home, we reflect on the memories we’ve made, the friends we’ve met, and the beauty of summer in spectacular San Diego.
