In honor the upcoming 100th Anniversary of Route 66 in 2026, SUN TOURS is creating 3 great new tours that will traverse the entire length of the famous roadway. In May 2023, we’ll start in Chicago and end in St. Louis. Join us and get your kicks!
DAY 1 L
We depart the ABQ Sunport for Chicago, our starting point. Upon arrival we board our deluxe motorcoach and head to Superdawg, a classic circa-1948 drive-in where car hops deliver Chicago-style dogs, fries & milkshakes for lunch. We then drive to Oak Park which has more Frank Lloyd Wright buildings than anywhere in the world where we will visit Wright’s home and studio and see many of the homes he designed. We check into our hotel on the Magnificent Mile for 2 nights.
DAY 2 B,D
This morning we explore Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. In the afternoon, we enjoy a cruise on the Chicago River to view over 40 Chicago landmarks, from hidden treasures to the city’s most well-known sights. Tonight we feast at Pizano’s Pizza and Pasta.
DAY 3 B
We begin our drive on Route 66 this morning with plenty of time to stop and explore the background of the towns and villages that cross our path. We visit the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame and Museum, a repository for thousands of pieces of historic memorabilia from the glory days of the Mother Road. We continue to Springfield, IL where we lodge two nights.
DAY 4 B,L
Springfield is famous as the home to Abraham Lincoln during his early days as a lawyer, orator, and politician. We’ll learn this important history and see the Old Illinois State Capitol, where Lincoln spoke.
DAY 5 B
We check out of our hotel and continue our drive along the Mother Road. We stop in Litchfield where there are two separate alignments of Route 66, one from 1930-1940 and the other from 1940-1977. We continue to St. Louis and check into our hotel.
DAY 6 B,D
Today starts with a tour of St. Louis. The afternoon allows us to explore the Gateway Arch, built as a monument to westward expansion of the U.S.A. and the world’s tallest arch. Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner Cruise on the Mississippi.
DAY 7 B
Today we must leave Route 66 and make our trip home – flying over the Mother Road to Albuquerque, our hearts and minds filled with the history of the U.S.A. that traveled this famous highway.
