Experience the re-awakening of spring along the Rhine River on the Emerald  Waterways Star-Ship. From the enchanting Keukenhof Gardens, in the Netherlands, at the peak of tulip season to the majestic heights of Switzerland, see the countryside bloom as we sail this historic river of Europe.

Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D

DAY 1

We depart Albuquerque on our overnight flight to Zurich.

DAY 2              D

We transfer to our hotel in Lucerne to begin our Swiss adventure. This afternoon we are on our own to explore and rest. Lucerne has wonderful shopping and floral displays. Perhaps we'll stroll by the lake and watch the swans. This evening we enjoy a welcome dinner.

DAY 3              B

After breakfast, an included walking tour highlights the city’s landmark - the famous 14th-century Chapel Bridge. See the 17th-century Renaissance Town Hall and town squares, all set amongst the beautiful backdrop of the Swiss Alps. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

DAY 4              B,D

Before departing for our ship in Basel, the day is free in Lucerne. We have the option to explore on our own or join an excursion to Mt. Pilatus – a mountain overlooking Lucerne that offers a unique alpine experience! This evening we will have our first dinner on board our beautiful ship.

DAY 5              B,L,D

On today’s adventure in Breisach, visit a typical Black Forest village, full of charm, cuckoo clocks and other German specialties. We can see demonstrations of traditional handicrafts, each offering a glimpse into rural life in the forest.  Alternatively, take part in a guided hike through some of the Black Forest trails.

DAY 6              B,L,D

Once docked in Kehl, transfer by coach across the river to Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region in France. Your guided walking tour includes the Grande Île - the historical city center and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for its medieval black and white timber framed buildings, old tanning houses, baroque sandstones buildings, canals and river locks, the city’s star attraction is the cathedral, dominating the main square.  We also have the option of an excursion to Riquewihr at an additional expense.

DAY 7              B,L,D

We continue downstream stream to the town of Mannheim, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers. From there, you have the opportunity to either visit the medieval town of Heidelberg including the impressive castle which overlooks the town or take part on an active hike to Heidelberg Hill.

DAY 8              B,L,D

We cruise to the 2000-year-old town of Koblenz, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. We enjoy a tour of Koblenz and visit the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the opposite side of the river. This fortress was part of the Prussian defense against the French in the 19th century and later used as a headquarters for the American military during WWII. This afternoon, we sail through the spectacular Rhine Gorge and pass countless medieval castles and vineyards. There are photo opportunities around every bend! See the infamous Lorelei statue and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, built on an island in the middle of the river as a medieval toll station.

DAY 9              B,L,D

Cruise along the Rhine River to Cologne. Founded by the Romans, the city is one of Germany's oldest and famous for its magnificent world-heritage listed Gothic cathedral. After lunch onboard, we join our local guide for an included walking tour of the Old Town, with free time for exploring. Cologne is one of Germany's largest and most modern cities largely due to a rebuilding plan post-WWII and has many museums and galleries. This evening we'll enjoy a farewell reception and dinner.

DAY 10             B,L,D

We've arrived in Amsterdam, a fascinating 700-year-old city of picturesque canals, world class museums, theatres and cafés. This morning we depart by coach for an included visit to Keukenhof Gardens. We'll discover why it’s called the ‘Garden of Europe’ as we admire gorgeous flowers at the peak of tulip season. We return to the ship for lunch and have the afternoon to explore this fascinating city on our own.

DAY 11            B

We must bid ‘auf wiedersehen’ to Europe as we head to the Amsterdam airport and return home with memories of life enriching experiences from our cruise along the Rhine River.
