City host Real after overcoming their Madrid rivals Atletico in the last round, but face a completely different task in this semi-final with Los Blancos showing their class in previous rounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. City are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League knockout stages, but that is a record that will be put to the test by in-form striker Karim Benzema.

Pep Guardiola is facing a defensive crisis, too, with Joao Cancelo suspended for this first leg, and Kyle Walker a major injury doubt having not trained or played since the last round against Atletico. John Stones, who would be first reserve at right-back, has also not trained in a week and could miss out too.

Guardiola said Gabriel Jesus won't be deployed at right-back, but he will have to play someone out of position if Walker and Stones are not fit.

Luka Modric: Real Madrid's Croatian midfield maestro still magnificent at 36

It's not difficult to pinpoint the biggest threat to Manchester City's chances of advancing to the Champions League final.

Karim Benzema is having a spectacular season for Real Madrid, with consecutive hat-tricks against Paris St-Germain and Chelsea suggesting the 34-year-old France striker is ready to inherit the 'Mr Champions League' mantle from former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Benzema is not Real's only 30-something star who keeps getting better with age, because midfield maestro Luka Modric - now 36 - is also having another magnificent campaign.

In fact, a case could be made that Modric is even more important to Real's overall structure than Benzema, because his dual ability to build play from the back and create danger around the opposition penalty area is fundamental to the team's coherence and fluidity.

The Croat has certainly made a major mark on this season's Champions League, delivering a glorious assist to Rodrygo with the outside of his right foot to force extra time in the quarter-final second leg against Chelsea.

That moment of magic was dubbed the "pass of the decade" by former Rangers striker Ally McCoist, while fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand declared it should be "illegal". Spanish sports newspaper Marca wrote: "With Modric on the pitch, nothing is impossible. Build him a statue now!"

Real president Florentino Perez is another to have sung his praises, saying Modric should be considered for another Ballon d'Or after shining against Athletic Bilbao in January's Spanish Super Cup final.

Gabriel Jesus starts as Grealish dropped - Man City fans name line-up they want vs Real Madrid

Manchester City face Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Therefore, City will have to be at the peak of their powers to avoid falling at the semi-final hurdle. To make matters more worrying, potentially, City will have to do it without the suspended Joao Cancelo and major doubts have been cast about the availability of both Kyle Walker and John Stones, who were each absent from Monday afternoon's open training session.

But how do City's fans want the Blues to line-up this evening? MEN Sport has taken a close look at what they have voted for using our interactive widget.

Unsurprisingly, the supporters have voted for Ederson to start in goal, with the Brazilian having played in all but one of City's Champions League matches this season. However, it is in defence where the biggest decisions will have to be made, largely down to Cancelo's suspension and Walker's injury troubles.

The fans want to see youngster CJ Egan-Riley start at right-back and Nathan Ake at left-back, with Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte forming a familiar-looking partnership at centre-back. Should that happen, it would be two changes to the defence that started against Watford, with Egan-Riley replacing Cancelo and Ake coming in for Oleksandr Zinchenko, meaning two changes at full-back.In midfield, the supporters want to see one change made, with Ilkay Gundogan drafted in at the expense of Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho. He will join Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri in the engine room.

In attack, City's supporters want to see two alternations to made to the front-three that started against Watford. They want to see Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden come in, meaning Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling would drop out.dertyrtyer
