Across the high plains of eastern New Mexico and the Texas panhandle is a true hidden treasure. Palo Duro Canyon, just outside Amarillo, is the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. The state park encompasses over 42 square miles of beautiful vistas and trails and is home to Texas!, “the most spectacular outdoor musical drama in the world.”

DAY 1              L

We’re off to the heart of the Texas Panhandle, and the second-largest canyon in the country, Palo Duro Canyon. Before arriving, we have lunch in an unusual place – Glenrio, New Mexico. Within the confines of the restaurant is a special museum that will surprise us and bring back memories. We have one more stop where we will also step back in time. We see an Old West, life-size Pioneer Town, view one of the Southwest’s finest art collections, learn the history of the petroleum industry , and more. This evening, we head to the Pioneer Amphitheatre to see the outdoor musical drama, Texas!* We check into the hospitable Amarillo Drury Inn & Suites. *Rain or shine show

DAY 2              B,L

Today is a bit slower-paced. We see the canyon from a morning perspective. Heading back home, we stop in Tucumcari to lunch and take an unusual tour of the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum and Natural Sciences Laboratory. Located in Quay County, the area is home to one of the Earth’s greatest fossil beds. Before you know it, we are home!
