Lake Powell is a man-made recreational area that transformed one of the Colorado River’s most beautiful canyons into its most beautiful lake. This tour captures both the grandeur of the canyon, as we raft below the dam to Lee’s Ferry, and the beauty of the lake, as we cruise to dramatic Navajo Canyon.
Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D
DAY 1 L
We drive west through the heart of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations. The colorful desert country is dotted with Navajo hogans and herds of sheep. We reach the Lake Powell Resort on the shore of Lake Powell to lodge three nights.
DAY 2 B
We cruise Lake Powell’s sky-blue waters to dramatic Navajo Canyon, with dark desert varnish that appears like a tapestry on towering rock walls. The cruise also includes views of Tower Butte and Glen Canyon Dam and a trip into a narrow side canyon. In the afternoon we board small vehicles to take us on a dirt road to a spectacular slot canyon located in Antelope Canyon Navajo Tribal Park. The narrow, swirling red sandstone canyon walls have been carved by wind and rain over thousands of years.
Our tour of the Glen Canyon Dam, which created Lake Powell, includes views from the top and the bottom of the dam and viewing the giant turbines that generate electricity. Then we board motorized rafts for a scenic float (you won’t get wet!) below the dam to Lee’s Ferry. Here on the Colorado River, we experience Glen Canyon as nature carved it, with steep red sandstone walls hundreds of feet high. We return to the Lake Powell Resort, our last chance to enjoy its lovely setting and the sunset colors. After exploring the canyon, we visit the John Wesley Powell Museum.
We drive through the pretty scenery of the northern Navajo reservation. The Shiprock signals our return to New Mexico, and we continue on to Albuquerque.
