The golden fall foliage of the aspen-filled Rockies glisten in the sunlight. We’ll enjoy them from a variety of locations, none more exhilarating than on the most scenic and majestic Amtrak route in America, across the Continental Divide. We’ll enjoy history, wildlife and lots of Rocky Mountain “highs” as well as some of Denver’s finest attractions.

Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D

DAY 1

Our deluxe coach takes us to the Animas River Valley of the San Juan Mountains and into downtown Durango, where we enjoy its western heritage and culture. We continue along the “Million Dollar Highway” to Silverton. After a visit to the San Juan County Historical Society Mining Heritage Center, we lodge tonight in Ouray, the “Switzerland of America.”

DAY 2                      B,L

Montrose’s Museum of the Mountain West is on True West magazine’s list of the "2018 Editor's Pick of 15 Museums Not to Miss." Typical shops from the Old west are faithfully restored and presented, such as a drugstore and a dentist office. We’ll enjoy a ranger presentation at the South Rim Black Canyon, lunch at Camp Robber, and a guided tour of the Montrose County Historical Museum. One night’s lodging in Grand Junction.

DAY 3                      B

The Amtrak California Zephyr travels from San Francisco to Chicago. Experienced travelers say it’s the most beautiful train trip in all North America. We enjoy the best portion of the journey on its daytime crossing of the Colorado Rockies. The route goes through the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel, crosses the Continental Divide, and continues, often in corkscrew fashion, to Denver’s Union Station. Lodging tonight is in Denver.

DAY 4                      B

Today, at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, we’ll discover Egyptian mummies and gems and minerals, take a pre-historic journey and a space odyssey, and much more. At the Denver Botanic Gardens, rated one of the best in the USA, we savor many of the 45 different gardens that cover its 23 acres. Then, a tour of the golden-domed Colorado State Capitol, one of the prominent features in Denver's skyline.

DAY 5                      B,L

We leave Denver for Colorado Springs. On the way, we visit and tour the beautiful Garden of the Gods, where 300' towering sandstone rock formations sit against the backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak.  One night’s lodging in Colorado Springs.

DAY 6                      B

It’s time to head home, but not before a visit to the U.S. Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1965, there is over 350 acres  planted with wheat, corn, barley and alfalfa to provide food for the more than 330 species of wildlife that inhabit the refuge. Throughout this tour, keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed and camera ready for some of the most exhilarating scenery and wildlife!
