The Canadian, the Trans-Canada train route from Toronto to Vancouver, is one of the world's greatest train rides. SUN TOURS expands on the experience, beginning, middle and end. We start with an amazing Niagara Falls experience. After crossing forests and plains, we disembark for three nights to explore the Canadian Rockies. Upon arrival in Vancouver, we visit Victoria's stunning Buchart Gardens. This is truly the trip of a lifetime!
Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D
We fly to Buffalo and check into our hotel. After dinner on our own, we rejoin our group for the exquisite night-time display of Niagara Falls.
DAY 2 B, L
Today we explore Niagara Falls in daylight. We start with a cruise on the Hornblower that takes us under the falls - be sure to wear your provided slicker! Next is Skylon Observation Tower, where we will see the complete 360 degree view and have lunch. Then, we drive on to Toronto where we enjoy a city tour before checking into our hotel for one night.
All aboard! Our train departs early this morning. We head west.
DAY 4 DAY 5
Our three day train ride passes through the forests of the Canadian Shield and on to the endless prairie and expansive farms of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We enter the prettiest part of our journey past Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, across the Yellowhead Pass over the Continental Divide, and down to Jasper. Our journey parallels the Yellowhead Route, Canada's original route of western exploration.
DAY 6 L
We detrain in Jasper to begin our sightseeing of the fabulous Canadian Rockies. First stop is Maligne Canyon whose depth and narrowness are astonishing. The route along the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff is one of the most scenic in the Canadian Rockies. Jagged, glacier-covered peaks line both sides of the narrow valley. Wildlife is often seen along the way. After a visit to Athabasca Falls we reach the Columbia Icefield Centre. We board a giant snowcoach for a ride on the Athabasca Glacier, then savor a delicious lunch. We stop at turquoise-colored Peyto Lake, a rare gem. We lodge two nights in Banff.
Beautiful Banff awaits our exploration. This morning we can enjoy free time or join a driving tour of Banff. The drive stops at Surprise Corner, where we see Bow Falls, Hoodoo Viewpoint, Cascade Rock Garden, and many other sites. In the afternoon, we ride gondola cars up Sulphur Mountain, named for the two sulphurous hot springs found on its lower slopes. The awe inspiring, 360-degree views of six mountain ranges, the Bow Valley and the town of Banff will amaze us.
DAY 8 B
We board our coach for our return to Jasper, where we'll have free time in the afternoon and lodge one night.
Our old friend, the Canadian, is waiting to take us on our overnight and final leg of our trans-Canada journey.
We arrive in Vancouver, depart our train and board the ferry to Victoria across the scenic Strait of Georgia. It is a short drive to Butchart Gardens where a profusion of color greets us. Flowers of every description grace this old limestone quarry, now a National Historic Site. It takes 50 full-time gardeners to tend its 45 lush acres! We lodge one night at the Hotel Grand Pacific on Victoria’s picturesque Inner Harbour.
DAY 11 B
We return to the mainland by ferry and into Vancouver, a gorgeous city with mountains in the background and the sea in the foreground. From Vancouver we'll head home.
