Our journey takes us to two of the most beautiful national parks: Carlsbad Caverns and Big Bend National Park. We’ll make our way through the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns and enjoy a full-day guided tour of Big Bend. The night skies will be seen by all when we visit the McDonald Observatory for a star party and tour. Our trip can’t be complete until we find our way to Indian Cliffs Ranch for a Cattleman’s dinner. On the way home, we make stops at the El Paso Museum of Art and the historic Magoffin Home.
Included meals are denoted: Breakfast: B, Lunch: L, Dinner: D
DAY 1 L
Our motor coach departs for our journey south. We travel to Capitan, NM, and are welcomed and treated to a lunch at the Smokey Bear restaurant. On our way to Carlsbad, we stop for a guided tour in Lincoln. One night's lodging in Carlsbad.
DAY 2 B
Our adventure begins hidden beneath the surface of the Chihuahan Desert. We make our way to the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns for a self-guided tour. Once finished, we cross into West Texas, where we lodge for one night at the Indian Lodge in Fort Davis. Our night is filled with a huge Star Party at the McDonald Observatory.
DAY 3 B,D
We start our morning returning to the observatory for a tour of the amazing telescopes and a close-up view of the sun if the skies are clear. Our adventures find us traveling further south to our destination. We arrive at Big Bend National Park and lodge for two nights at the Chisos Mountains Lodge. Be forewarned, though, there is no cell phone or TV service here, only pure rest and relaxation for us all!
DAY 4 B,L
We meet our step-on guide in the morning for a full day exploring the scenery of majestic Big Bend National Park. Wildlife, birds, rivers, limestone carved canyons, mountains, and even a view of the Texas-Mexico border, await us during our day. We are treated to a field lunch by our guide before we continue through the vastness of the park.
DAY 5 B,D
Today we head west, back towards the Land of Enchantment, but not without a few stops along the way. At the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, we learn about the distinctive natural history, human history, and confluence of cultures before the arrival of the Europeans. Later the lights and cameras of the movie set come alive at the Indian Cliffs Ranch. A working ranch that has provided the setting for some of our favorite movies (Lone Wolf McQuade and Courage Under Fire, just to name a few), don’t forget to check out the ranch after dinner at the Cattleman's Steakhouse. We continue into El Paso for one night's lodging.
DAY 6 B
Our tour concludes with a visit of El Paso, TX. The historic Magoffin Home begins our day, and we explore the history of Joseph Magoffin, one of the first advocates for development of El Paso. After enjoying the gardens and home, we head to the El Paso Museum of Art. Then we take in the local culture with a stroll through the downtown historic plaza before saying goodbye with many memories of relaxation and fun.
