Copper Canyon may be in one of the most remote regions in Mexico, but we make it accessible. We fly into Mazatlan, then ride the Ferromex Chepe from El Fuerte to Copper Canyon. After exploring the canyon region and nearby attractions, we fly home from Chihuahua.

DAY 1              D

We depart Albuquerque and fly to Mazatlán, Mexico. We meet our Tour Director and transfer to our beautiful beach hotel, Pueblo Bonito. We tour Old Mazatlan and learn about the 19th-century buildings, plazas and local markets. Welcome dinner tonight.


DAY 2              B,L,D

After breakfast, we depart for Culiacan. We enjoy a relaxed lunch by the River Walk. Then on to El Fuerte where we dine and lodge two nights at the historic Posada del Hidalgo.


DAY 3              B,L,D   

We visit Copomos to learn about the indigenous Mayo culture. We return to El Fuerte for a guided walking tour. El Fuerte, for centuries the most important commercial center in Northwestern Mexico, is now picturesque town surrounded by one of Latin America’s last standing dry tropical forests.


DAY 4              B,D

We catch the Ferromex Chepe this morning. An engineering marvel that travels from sea level to almost 8,000 feet to take us to Copper Canyon. Our Tour Director introduces us to the Tarahumara, or Raramuri, people. We lodge two nights at the Hotel Mirador.


DAY 5              B,L,D

Today we tour Copper Canyon Park and descend to the lower canyon on a gondola ride. We visit a Tarahumara village. Afterward, we will have time for some shopping before returning to our hotel.


DAY 6              B,D

After breakfast we depart for the city of Creel. We visit the San Ignacio Mission and Lake Arareko. We dine and lodge tonight at the Hotel Quinta Mission.


DAY 7              B,L,D

We depart for Cuauhtémoc where we learn about the Mennonite community that settled here nearly 100 years ago. We continue to Chihuahua where we see colonial and revolutionary landmarks such as Pancho Villa’s home, the extraordinary colonial Cathedral, and the Spanish Aqueduct. A farewell dinner tonight.



DAY 8              B

We transfer to the Chihuahua airport to head home with fond memories of the beauty and culture of Mexico’s Copper Canyon.
